GREEN BUILDING…

What is a Green Building?

Green Buildings are healthy, efficient buildings that have a minimal impact on the environment.

The Green Building process is a departure from traditional approaches to design and construction that seek only to complete buildings in the most cost effective manner possible without regard for the environment or occupant health. Green buildings are designed and built to minimize the use of energy, water, and materials while providing healthier environments for occupants.

There are three major principles in Green Building…

Energy Efficiency – A green home is designed to require the least amount of energy possible during its regular operation. Efficient heating or cooling systems, lighting, and appliances minimize the use of energy in the home. Some green homes may take advantage of renewable energy and generate power on site reducing their dependence on costly “grid” energy.

Resource Conservation – The natural resources used for construction, maintenance, and everyday home use are minimized in a green building. Water conservation is an important consideration for the selection of kitchen and bath fixtures, and native landscaping lessens the need for regular irrigation. The building materials used in a green home are typically considered “sustainable” or rapidly renewable because they can replenish themselves quickly.

Indoor Air Quality – Green homes are healthy homes. Materials used in the construction of the home will contain low or zero levels of harmful toxins. Homes are designed with ventilation systems to ensure a steady flow of fresh air and eliminate moisture, mold, and other contaminants that can affect occupant health and well being.
